Empowerment through Law of the Common People- ELCOP is going to organize 12th CLR- Community Law Reform Research 2022 in collaboration with Sports for Hope and Independence Bangladesh on the theme “Street Children of Bangladesh: Making them Visible” from October 2022 to January 2023. The CLR program aims to evaluate the situations and lifestyles of the street children on social, economic and cultural aspects in the major cities of Bangladesh.

Sports for Hope and Independence Bangladesh has been selected for Dr B R Ambedkar International Award 2022 in the category of Sport for Development. The award giving ceremony will be held on 11th October 2022 in Delhi. Sharmin Farhana Founder and CEO, SHI said We are very honored to be awarded to this prestigious award. Bio of Dr B R Ambedkar:

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (14 April 1891 – 6 December 1956) was an Indian jurist, economist, social reformer and political leader who headed the committee drafting the Constitution of India from the Constituent Assembly debates, served as Law and Justice minister in the first cabinet of Jawaharlal Nehru, and inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement after renouncing Hinduism.

Sports for Hope and Independence Bangladesh is continuously working to develop coaches and community youth leaders to create a coaching culture in Bangladesh. A series of fortnightly virtual sessions were held as part of the continuous professional development of coaches and youth leaders in collaboration with a UK-based organization, Sports for Joy. Paul McWilliams (founder of Sport for Joy) highly decorated physical educator has conducted the sessions.

SHI members and volunteer spent a day at Dhanmondi Buddhi Protibondhi School with amazingly talented students ( Autism Spectrum Disorder). Our student volunteer Farheen Binte Ibrahim assisted students in painting practice. A small token of appreciation presented to encourage all the students and wrap up the session with some songs.

In July, the Office of the Register General (Birth and Death Registration) in Bangladesh withdrew the mandatory clause of parents’ birth certificate to get the birth certificate of children on the 27th of July 2022. This followed an application by Barrister Tapas Kanti Baul on behalf of a rights organisation (Sports for Hope and Independence).

Sports for Hope and Independence Bangladesh is now officially partner of the Homeless World Cup. From now on #shiBangladesh will prepare Bangladesh homeless football team to participate in Homeless World Cup.

The High Court has issued a rule upon the concerned bodies of the government to explain as to why the respondents should not be directed to take necessary steps as per the existing law and rules to issue birth certificate to all street children of the country. It also wanted to know from the respondents to explain as to why their inaction in not giving birth certificate to all street children of the country.

The High Court bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the order on Thursday after hearing a writ petition filed by a rights organisation named ‘Sports for Hope and Independence (SHI)’. Women and Children Affairs Secretary, Home Secretary and Office of the Registrar General of the birth and death registration authorities have been asked to comply with the rule within four weeks.

The High Court also directed the respondents to submit a report before the court within three months describing the necessary steps they have taken to issue birth certificate to all the street children of Bangladesh under the existing law and rules.

Sharmin Farhana, President of the SHI filed the writ petition on June 12 this year as a public interest litigation.

Barrister Tapas Kanti Baul appeared in the court hearing on behalf of the writ petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Bepul Bagmar represented the state.

SHI filed an application on April 25 this year to the birth and death registration authorities for issuing their birth certificate. But the authorities didn’t make any answer to the application. Then the organisation filed the writ petition,” added the lawyer.

Citing a 2014 statistics of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) the lawyer said more than 1.1 million street children in the country who have no birth registration certificates.

All people have a right to birth registration. It is a fundamental right, recognized by article 24, paragraph 2 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and article 7 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Unfortunately, Street children are not getting the opportunity to have birth certificates in Bangladesh. Sports for Hope and Independence Bangladesh filed A writ petition on Sunday, pleading for High Court’s direction to give birth registration certificates to the street children.
